Charles Dickens - A Life by Claire Tomalin

14 February 2012

Charles Dickens- author, journalist, playwright, performer, philanthropist, was born 200 years ago. His novels, often tragic, frequently comic, have never gone out of print. These were novels, produced in instalments, which the public clamoured for. Dickens depicted life based on his own experiences, his characters inspired by the people he met and observed and woven into his stories as if by a caricaturist. Uriah Heep, Oliver Twist, Ebenezer Scrooge, what eccentricities and whimsy they conjure in the imagination of the reader. But as well as being the most prolific writer of the day Dickens was a fierce, vocal and tireless opponent of the poverty, despair and deprivation which blighted the lives of so many in Victorian England as well as the slaves in America; he was one of the first campaigners for human rights.

The Biography by Claire Tomalin, Charles Dickens – A Life, is essential reading for those fascinated by one of the greatest writers of English literature, intelligently and thoroughly researched, detailed , yet readable , the complexities of the man are studied and analysed and give a remarkable insight into this greatest of Victorian writers. There are well documented facts about Dickens and speculation about his private life where his rejection of his wife and his family are at odds with his altruism. Claire Tomalin makes no excuses for the frailties of Dickens, but she writes with great understanding, knowledge and empathy for Dickens the genius. This is a superb biography beautifully written, beautifully illustrated and a fitting tribute to Charles Dickens.
