Alan Hollinghurst wins at the Galaxy Book Awards 2011

Shock waves rippled through the book industry when Alan Hollinghurst was omitted from the Mann Booker Prize shortlist this year, but the judges at the prestigious Galaxy Book Awards acknowledged the acclaimed writer with the Author of the Year Award for his book "The Stranger's Child". The novel was highly praised by the critics for its elegant prose, and sharply drawn characters. It is an astute and imaginative book sweeping through a century of life in England and the changes in morality, attitudes and values.
Claire Tomalin was awarded Biography of the Year for "Charles Dickens: A Life". A beautifully written account of the true genius who was Charles Dickens. Meticulously researched with fascinating insights into his private life and his relationship with his family.
Sarah Winman won the Galaxy New Writer of the Year for her debut novel "When God Was a Rabbit" a story spanning 40 years about the bond of love, poignant, heartfelt and completely unsentimental, witty, sharp and compelling.
The More4 Popular Non-Fiction Book of the Year went to Caitlin Moran for "How To Be a Woman" Essentially a Feminist book it's outrageous, crude, incredibly funny and for many women absolutely true.

Crime Thriller of the Year went, unsurprisingly to S.J. Watson for his thriller "Before I Go To Sleep". Again this was a triumphant first novel. It's a tale calmly told, the suspense and unease slowly emerging, the sudden twists and turns leave the reader doubting what is real and what is imagined.
Simon Hopkinson won Food and Drink Book of the Year beating Jamie Oliver. Simon's recipe for good cooking is quality ingredients cooked with care, although not necessarily expensive. It's an essential aid for everyone who loves to cook.
Dawn French was clearly delighted to win the Popular Fiction Book of the Year with "A Tiny Bit Marvellous". The book is an easy read and like Dawn, very ,very funny.
Jackie Collins was awarded Outstanding Achievement and who better than Ms Collins to win this award? She has sold 400 million books in 40 years of writing. Her novels are pure escapism, passionate, glamorous and sexy. Her latest book "Goddess of Vengeance" was published in April this year and was snapped up by her legions of fans.
