Su Tong's political novel 'The Boat to Redemption' has won the Man Asian literary prize and the $10,000 award.

The Boat to Redemption is the story of a Communist party official who is disgraced by his playboy lifestyle and ends up making a new life on a river barge amongst the boat people.

Su Tong is probably best known for having written Wives and Concubines, which was adapted for the Bafta-winning film Raise the Red Lantern (1991).

Last year's prize winner was taken by Filipino writer Miguel Syjuco and his novel Ilustrado.
