Teenage Fiction: Find books to captivate young adults!

Encouraging enjoyment of reading and literature in teenagers and young adults can be extremely difficult because the choice of books is bewildering. After the stress of end of year exams, especially GCSE, AS and A Levels, good fiction is the perfect way to help young people unwind.
However the type of fiction around has altered dramatically since the days when the parents of teenagers were reading fiction. Teenage fiction didn't really exist as a separate entity until recent years. Its recent emergence requires it to compete with TV and video games; fiction has got to include its own fair share of drugs, violence, sex and rock and roll, and short of locking up our teenagers until they are 25, it would appear that we have little choice but to accept that this generation is not likely to be satisfied with Lord of the Rings or Love Story. And as sad as it is to accept the changes, it is important to remember that literature can represent popular culture at many levels, and is a very sophisticated method of learning life's lessons and social norms. Young people have to navigate increasingly complex social worlds, which are not always enviable. So as we may not always approve of the conduct of many characters portrayed in drama and fiction, it is, at the very least, a very non threatening way of opening up dialogue about some of the difficult subjects teenagers are often forced to confront.
