The Crime Writers Association: International Dagger Book Awards

The CWA award ceremony takes place on Friday 23rd June at the Theakstons Old Peculiar Writing Festival, and is the most prestigious award for the crime writing genre, where Daggers are awarded with prizes up to £20,000, for the best crime novel of the year, known as the Gold Dagger. In order to acquire membership of the Crime Writers Association, you must have written one crime novel that has been published with an authentic publisher.
The Awards and 2010 Shortlisted Books
The International Dagger is a fiction literary award for novels that could include crime, spy, suspense or thriller, and have been translated to English from their original language for a UK audience.
This year's nominations are:
The award will be judged by award winning crime writer Ann Cleeves; Karen Meek a library assistant and Euro Crime Website founder www.eurocrime.co.uk; Bookseller – John Murray-Browne; and Ruth Morse who teaches English Literature at the University of Paris. To be eligible for the prize the books must have been published between June 1st 2009 and 31st May 2010. The winning author will receive £1000 and the winning translator £500.
The CWA Gold Dagger Award is a competition that recognises the quality of any non fictional work on a real life crime written by any international author published in English within the UK. It is a biannual award and shortlisted books must have been published between June 2008 and May 2010. The winner will receive £2000.

The Dagger in the Library Award is a prize nominated by librarians to celebrate popular authors who have not quite broken through to international fame, but who are highly regarded and have a loyal following. This prize is £2500 to the author and £300 to the participating libraries reading groups. This year's nominated authors are:
RJ Ellory; Ariana Franklin; Mo Hayder; Simon Beckett; Denise Mina;and Chris Simms

The Short Story Dagger is an award for paid for contributions by a publishing journal for a story written in English between June2009 and May 2010. Five of this year's six nominations were published in Thriller II, and include: A Calculated Risk by Shaun Chercover; The Weapon by Jeffrey Deaver; Boldt's Broken Angel by Ridley Pearson; Killing Time by Jon Land; Protecting the Innocent by Simon Wood; Can You Help Me Out There by Robert Ferrigno. The final nomination is Peter Robinson' Like a Virgin was published in his collections 'The Price of Love'. The winner will receive a £500 prize.
The Debut Dagger is a new crime writer's award for a writer who has not had a novel published commercially
Another set of Daggers are awarded in the autumn. These include the John Creasey Dagger for new blood, and Ian Fleming Steel and Gold Daggers.
The 2010 prestigious Cartier Diamond Dagger Award was received by Val McDermid at a special Champagne reception in May, in London, in honour of her outstanding achievement within the crime writing genre.
