Children's votes make Skulduggery Pleasant Irish Book of the Noughties

Isn't if fantastic when you wake up to good news? And there is no more pleasant a thought than one of teenage readers so passionate about a book they bothered to vote in a competition. The Irish book of the decade considers books of all genres in the same category, which makes the victory for The Skulduggery series' writer, Derek Landy, even more gracious in his decision not to give a speech that gloated on his achievement.
Since the Skulduggery Pleasant series began in 2007, Landy has written 4 more books. The fifth, 'Mortal Coil', awaits publication in September 2010. The stories are about the character Gordon, a dead magician, who is supported by his twelve year old niece Stephanie, by using dirty tricks to solve evil crimes. Gordon is a writer of horror stories, and after his death he leaves his property to Stephanie. She discovers that his writing is authentic and not fiction, and becomes intent on recovering a mystifying key. Just as she finds herself in conflict with an evil force, aid comes from Uncle Gordon, the literal family skeleton in the cupboard.
Landy, recognises that he has been fortunate to have produced his creative writing at a time when there was a definite gap in the market for his type of fiction. However, to win the 'the Bord Gáis Energy Irish Book Awards' shows that Skulduggery Pleasant success is much more than merely a response to a dearth of good work, as he beat of stiff competition from an array of talented Irish writers such as, Seamus Heaney, Sebastian Barry, Cecelia Ahern and Marian Keyes.
