'Troubles' by J G Farrell wins Lost Man Booker Prize

The Lost Man Booker Prize winner was announced last night and the prize was awarded to J G Farrell. His book 'Troubles' captured 38% of the public vote, winning by a clear majority over the other five shortlisted books. Sadly, J G Farrell died in 1979.
'Troubles' is the first of a trilogy about the empire, and was followed by the Booker Prize winning The Siege of Krishnapur (1973) and The Singapore Grip (1978). Set in Ireland, Troubles is a black comedy about Major Brendan Archer, who returns from the 1st world war to an Ireland on the brink of a revolution and its subsequent battle for independence, and is looking to rekindle his relationship to his elusive fiancé. He finds himself captivated by the beautiful, but decaying Majestic Hotel, enough to allow Brendan to be largely unaware of the realities of the world outside its walls. Such is this creative genius, 'Troubles' has not been out of print since 1970.
