Stern talks on how to manage climate change at Brighton Festival

Global warming will challenge the world and take civilisation into previously uncharted territory. Charles Emmerson, associate Director of the World Economic Forum, and Nicholas Stern, former Chief Economist at the World Bank, give some hard hitting factual narrative too important for the politicians and the population to ignore.

Author of the 2005 Stern Review – Nicholas Stern will appear at the Brighton festival this evening to discuss the issue of global warming with Charles Emmerson, author of 'The Future History of the Arctic'. Stern has long argued that market forces of supply and demand are unreliable by suggesting the impact of production and climate change essentially reflects market failure, where the true costs were not anticipated when the increased demand for oil and globalisation collided. Stern's book, Blueprint for a safer planet: How to Manage Climate Change and Create a New Era of Progress and Prosperity, responds to claims that the period of global economic meltdown is the wrong time to tackle climate change. Stern rebukes these political and economic arguments believing there is enormous economic potential in tackling the issue of climate change head on.

Emmerson's book is an anthology of the Arctic and explains the science of global warming and the planets dependency on the region, as well as the historical relationship of the countries within the Arctic circles relationship with the landscape.

The discussion will be held at The Corn Exchange, Brighton, this evening at 7.30pm, and will be chaired by Isabel Hilton. Tickets are still available at the Brighton festival website.
