Ian McEwan's Solar - bringing humour to the topic of climate change
15 March 2010
His books fly off the shelves in there millions, but could the much-celebrated writer Ian McEwan be up for some flak with his next book Solar, a humorous look into the debate about climate change?
Solar will be released this Thursday 18th March by the 61-year-old writer and will tell the story of Nobel-Prize winning physicist, Michael Beard, a cynical, overweight and self-obsessed man whose mission is to recover his reputation by creating an energy alternative that will solve the world's climate crisis.
Although McEwan's novel has been criticised by some for being overly light-hearted and too enjoyable for serious fiction, Solar is typical of McEwan's literary style and knits together his usual page turning plots, insightful characters and sharp observation. But, more unusually for him, this comic novel is hilariously funny, much like his moral responsibility satire Amsterdam, which won him the Booker Prize in 1998.
In an interview with The Telegraph, McEwan said he's wanted to write about climate change for years "but it just seemed so huge and so distorted by facts and figures and graphs and science and then virtue. I couldn't quite see how a novel would work without falling flat with moral intent." But his chance came in 2005 when he was asked by the environmental group Cape Farewell to join them on a trip to the North Pole. Whilst there he spent a great amount of time thinking from the boot room and observing the clutter and chaos surrounding the issue of climate change.
The writer said he discovered "something comic about idealism, and our capacity for rational thinking and gathering data and evidence on the one hand, and on the other these little worms of self-interest, laziness and innate chaos".
Ian McEwan is often called Britain's national author and it's obvious why. Solar is a fast-paced, sophisticated and intelligent comedy about pride, sexual recklessness and the existing devotion to political correctness. Solar is funny yet serious and is on-topic morally, but is detached by its sarcasm – a gripping read!
