First Graphic Novel to receive the Scott O'Dell Award

The Storm In The Barn by Matt Phelan has contraversially become the first graphic novel to win the Scott O'Dell Award for historical fiction.

 

The tale follows a young boy who lives in Kansas during the Dust Bowl era, however, some critics have argued that The Storm In The Barn should not qualify for the award because it is a fantasy story.

 

Judge Roger Sutton counteracts this argument by saying:


"The Storm in the Barn has all the ingredients of great fiction - astute characterisation, evocative atmosphere, a compelling story, a theme rewarding consideration - and gives us a unique vision of the Dirty Thirties. How is it not historical fiction?"
