The Turkish gunman who shot Pope John Paul II wants to sell his story

11 January 2010

Mehmet Ali Agca, the gunman who shot and injured Pope John Paul II nearly 30 years ago, is after a book deal when he is released from prison later this month.

Agca, who shot the Pope in St. Peter's Square 1981, has served 19 years in an Italian prison and will be released on Jan 18th. In 1983 John Paul II met Agca in prison and forgave him for his assassination attempt.

Now, 52 years old, the gunman has said that he hopes to work on a book, film and television projects about his attempted killing of the Pope and has allegedly asked for £1m for an exclusive interview.

His endeavor to make money on the back of his crime has called "shameful" by Italian investigators and MPs.
