Is the book industry obsessed with celebrities?

Former politics correspondent John Sergeant spoke out in an ITN interview yesterday, saying that the book industry is too obsessed with stars and is moving in the wrong direction.


The 65-year old broadcaster, who recently had a contract with Macmillan to write a series of memoirs but changed his mind and gave back the tens of thousands of pounds, said; "It's a sad case of the celebrity culture going mad. A name and a potential book tour is far too high on the list of desirables. But that's what people want to buy. It's very difficult to make a career out of writing unless you've had a career in another area, which is mad".
