Kate Clanchy wins short story prize

Poet Kate Clanchy, the author of Antigona and Me, has won this year's BBC National Short Story Award with "The Not-Dead and the Saved".


Clanchy's story, which is set in a hospital and explores parental love and sacrifice, fought off strong competition from the shortlist including Orange Prize winners Lionel Shriver and Naomi Alderman and Bafta-nominated writer Jane Rogers.


The Glasgow-born writer was awarded the prize and £15,000 cheque at a ceremony at the Free Word Centre in London on 7th December. Sara Maitland, who came second for "Moss Witch", was awarded £3,000 and each of the other shortlisted authors walked away with £500.
