Guardian First Book Prize goes to Petina Gappah

A collection of short stories by Zimbabwean author Petina Gappah has won the Guardian First Book Award 2009.


An Elegy for Easterly (Faber), which was described by judge Claire Armitstead as "humane and disarmingly funny", wins Gappah an advertising package for her book in the Guardian and the Observer and a £10,000 cheque.


To win, Gappah had to fight-off strong competition from the other shortlisted novels: A Swamp Full of Dollars by Michael Peel; The Rehearsal by Eleanor Catton;The Wilderness by Samantha Harvey and The Selected Works of T S Spivet by Reif Larsen.
