The Red and the Black: Glory and Uncertainty at Saracens plc Book

In this interesting and, at times, humorous book, the authors recount (with the aid of a selection of action photographs) the history of the Saracens Rugby Club, from its founding in 1876 and amalgamation with neighbouring club the Crusaders in 1878.The club's early "friendly poverty" and their various ground moves before settling into their less-than-salubrious Bramley Road surroundings in 1939 are all captured.Finances have played as big a part in the club's history as fixtures; yet the reluctance of some of the more prosperous clubs to play them in the early days never dented the commitment of their players or faithful followers. In fact, in time they became regarded as the "nursery" for the national team. Most of these financial problems were resolved in 1995, when Rugby Union became professional, allowing the Saracens to "go public" and attractive investment and sponsorship. However, the authors both reserve judgement on the change, fearing the razzmataz that has overtaken American Football will also hijack Rugby Union, putting the emphasis increasingly on monetary returns. The modern Saracens, with their upmarket stadium and regular crowds of upto 20,000 people may seem a long way from the earlier maximum crowds of1,000, but Alwyn and Singer cover the whole journey in an entertaining and interesting book which will appeal to anyone interested in the past, present--or future--of the game. --Peter KiddRead More
