The Peak District embraces the most southerly parts of the Pennines, marking the transition from lowland to highland England. The landscape comprises of two strongly contrasting elements: the gritstone of the Dark Peak and the lighter limestone of the White Peak. The Dark Peak or High Peak embraces the wildest terrain, the remotest farms and highest hills.
