The Kashmir Shawl Book

Winner of the 2012 Epic Romantic Novel Award, Rosie Thomas has written a thoroughly engaging novel with The Kashmir Shawl. A tale of secrets, love, courage and loneliness it begins simply enough with a bereavement. Mair Ellis is helping to clear her deceased father's house in Wales and finds among his effects a Kashmir shawl wrapped in thin paper. It's stained and worn in parts but exquisitely beautiful and hidden in the folds is an envelope containing a lock of hair and this marks the beginning of a quest for Mair. Decades before, her grandparents had left Wales to travel to India, her grandfather was a missionary accompanied by his new wife Nerys. They arrived in the beautiful lakeside city of Srinagar, an ex-Pat enclave of carved house boats, pampered wives, gossip and convention. It is there during one of her husband's many absences to go and preach and convert that Nerys becomes involved in a life changing relationship. The story of the grandmother and the journey of discovery for Mair are seamlessly woven and beautifully recounted, but what makes this novel special is the background. The sounds, sights, smells and spectacular beauty of India, particularly Kashmir, are superbly evoked. The Kashmir Shawl is a very satisfying read.Read More
