The Judas Judge: A Kevin Kerney Novel Book

A new Kevin Kerney mystery is a bright spot in any publishing season, and in McGarrity's fifth book in the series, he brings Kerney back home to southern New Mexico on the trail of a spree killer who's murdered six victims at remote campgrounds. But something in the crime pattern tells Kerney these murders aren't as random as they first appear. Instead, they seem to be senseless killings meant to cover up the last one, a very personal crime involving family secrets hidden for generations. It's supposed to be the last case for Kerney, whose unexpected inheritance of a vast tract of prime ranchland and recent marriage to a career army officer (Hermit's Peak, Serpent Gate) have him putting in for early retirement from the police force. And it's all mixed up with a stalker seeking revenge on Kerney for his part in an Internal Affairs investigation that got a cop kicked off the force and led to a deadly gunfight that still haunts Kerney. This is a solid bull's-eye for McGarrity. It leaves the reader hungry for his next, in which presumably Kerney will rethink his retirement plans as he copes with impending fatherhood and the kind of financial freedom most lawmen never experience. What makes this series work is not only its likable hero but also the brilliant evocation of the American Southwest he calls home. --Jane AdamsRead More

Deputy state police chief Kevin Kerney is weeks away from trading in his badge for a rancher's hat, when six murders are committed late one night at remote campgrounds in south central New Mexico. Most of the evidence points to the work of a spree killer, but peculiarities at one crime scene suggest another grisly possibility, that five random people have been shot to death to cover the premeditated murder of the sixth victim, Vernon Langsford, a retired judge and wealthy businessman. Ruling out neither scenario, Kerney uses all the available resources of the New Mexico State Police to mount a high-profile search for the possible spree killer and conduct a deep probe into the life of Vernon Langsford. Under pressure to make an arrest, Kerney pieces together a shocking history of family betrayal, is harassed by a stalker with an unknown agenda, forced into a gunfight with a crooked cop that may taint his entire career, and shaken by new doubts about his plan to give up police work. Most troubling of all, he is reacquainted with a proud Apache woman from his past, who discloses a secret of her own which could easily disrupt his recent marriage to a wife he rarely sees, career army officer Sara Brannon. Challenged by the most sensational case of his career, Kerney must use all his skill to track down and bring to justice a brilliant and ruthless killer. "Michael McGarrity gets better and better. How good it is to follow a detective created by a man who has been there and done that."-- Tony Hillerman "Michael McGarrity does for New Mexico what James Lee Burke does for Louisiana. The land is in his blood. So is crime writing. He's a natural born storyteller with a hard-earned personal knowledge of how cops work."-- David Morrell, bestselling author of First Blood and Double Image
