The Diamond Queen: Elizabeth II and Her People Book

Andrew Marr's book is a fitting tribute to Queen Elizabeth 11 in this her Diamond Jubilee year. She is a Queen who throughout her 60 years as Monarch has at all times remained loyal, steadfast and constant. In the words of Mr Cameron "she has always been a source of wisdom and continuity" She is respected and admired by leaders across the globe and even those who are not Royalists acknowledge her strength of character and courage. This book by Andrew Marr examines her commitment to her people and how she has adapted to changes in society during the 60 years of her reign. Her relationships with her Prime Ministers (12 in total so far), her demanding public engagements and glimpses of her family life, the influence of Philip and the effects of the death of Diana are all considered intelligently and without speculation. From a somewhat privileged viewpoint Marr has observed his subject and clearly has a rare insight into the life of the Queen. The book is not presented in chronological order but rather in themes or in episodes in the life of Elizabeth as Queen. There are no shocking revelations in the book, there is no sordid gossip, due in part to the respect Marr has for the Queen and due also to the fact that Her Majesty is a very private person. Even in her darkest hours, when her father died or during her "Annus Horribilis" in 1992 or when tragedy ended the life of Diana she has always remained dignified and discreet. Marr's fascinating, factual and thoroughly researched book is a testimony to her life as Queen and testimony to the survival of the monarchy under her rule.Read More

With the flair for narrative and the meticulous research that readers have come to expect Andrew Marr turns his attention to the monarch and to the monarchy chronicling the Queen's pivotal role at the centre of the state which is largely hidden from the public gaze and making a strong case for the institution itself. Arranged thematically rather than chronologically Marr dissects the Queen's political relationships crucially those with her Prime Ministers; he examines her role as Head of the Commonwealth and her deep commitment to that Commonwealth of nations; he looks at the drastic changes in the media since her accession in 1952 and how the monarchy and the monarch have had to change and adapt as a result. Indeed he argues that under her watchful eye the monarchy has been thoroughly modernized and made as fit for purpose in the twenty-first century as it was when she came to the throne and a 'new Elizabethan age' was ushered in.
