The Crime Studio Book

The gleeful noir mayhem continues in slacker satirist Steve Aylett's collection The Crime Studio (actually his first book, but released in America after Slaughtermatic, Toxicology, and Atom). The writing in The Crime Studio is slightly less fevered than we're used to from Aylett, and the hyper-Chandlerian metaphors aren't pushed so far that they're humorous for the wrong reason; but the stories are just as punk-rock fast and short (few of the 27 interrelated stories are longer than five pages, and some are shorter). The Crime Studio is packaged as science fiction, but little in the book fits that genre, unless the label refers to the fantastically cartoony ultraviolence or the surreal improbability of Aylett's imaginary city. --Cynthia Ward Read More

Beerlight, the city of all our futures, is not a safe place. Crime - occasionally sophisticated, normally violent, always hilarious in its unintended effects - is the motor of the city's economy. Weaponry, rather than fast cars or designer clothes, is the ultimate status symbol. The cast of hoodlums includes burglar extraordinaire Billy Panacea, Kicker Charlie the casino owner, conman-cum-lawyer Harpoon Specter, Henry Blince the donut-obsessed Chief of Police, Getty Hundred Ram the unwitting bank-robber and other fun-loving felons who hang out at the Delayed Reaction Bar on Valentine Street. The narrator is only referred to as 'the clown' by his fellow criminals, and like all wise jesters, he holds a mirror up to our own world ...
