Serenity explores the influences of sexual orientation, emotional honesty and personal integrity in developing loving relationships with other human beings©¤ issues which concern everybody, knowingly or otherwise, as they struggle to find sustaining love in the course of their voyages through what is for many people often a poorly signposted life. The theme of this book is therefore universal and, for this reason alone, it will appeal to a wide range of readers of all ages and backgrounds. The principal characters all come from very different walks of life and by chance are first brought together as a result of their common problems with alcohol and their membership in Alcoholics Anonymous as a consequence. This novel charts the courses of their developing relationships with each other, both within and outside the context of AA, relationships which can lead to some highly dramatic encounters as well as some very unpredictable and unexpected outcomes. Although this story as it progresses reveals much about the nature and psychology of alcoholism, as well as how the AA Fellowship deals with it, readers, whatever their backgrounds, will quickly find many traits of the characters they can strongly identify with. It is not so much a story about alcoholism as about the pursuit of human happiness in general and how different people go about trying to find it¡ªwith very different starting positions, different approaches and with varying degrees of success. Winston Pate also tells this essentially serious but in places very profound story in a highly entertaining and often humorous way which sustains the reader¡¯s keen interest and level of enjoyment right through to the end.
