Popper in China Book
Sir Karl Popper is probably this century's most influential Western philosopher of science. "Popper in China" draws together a selection of papers on Popper and the issues he treats, which were given at a recent conference at Wuhan University, sponsored by the Open University Foundation, by distinguished Chinese and Western philosophers of science. Professor Jiang Tianji has been instrumental in the development of a school of Western philosophy of science in China in the period after the Cultural Revolution. W.H. Newton-Smith, Professor Jiang, his colleagues and his students have been particularly interested in the work of Karl Popper. In the Chinese context, his works have had an additional political importance. Popper's stress on Fallibilism, experimental testing and critical rational discussion, while having a ubiquitous relevance, seemed a vital antidote to the excesses of the Cultural Revolution. The study of Popper's work not only provided a valuable insight into Western science and philosophy of science, it also had application in the wider context of social political philosophy issues. Contributors include Fan Dainain, Ian Hacking, Martin Hollis, W.H.Newton-Smith and A.M. Petroni. This book should be of interest to advanced students of philosophy and scholars of Popper.Read More
