Linux Unleashed Book

There are basically two kinds of computer manual: those taking a task-based approach and those intended as a reference. Almost all current books on Linux are reference-based, and Linux Unleashed is no exception. Nearly 1500 pages cover Linux distributions concurrent with RedHat 6. In fact, despite the occasional reference to OpenLinux and Debian, unless you're a Redhat 6 user expect to adapt much of the information supplied, especially where it refers to distribution specific configuration files. Cynics may note that this books bears a close resemblance to Sams' Redhat Linux 6 Unleashed by the same authors--less John Goerzen's Debian additions--which comes with Redhat 6.0 on CD. Still, the level of detail and explanation provided is impressive. Coverage starts with installation issues, moves on to the X system and covers the various window managers in an evenhanded manner considering that Redhat is a Gnome house these days. DNS, NIS, NFS and other network subjects are well covered though the Sendmail section, despite being example-led, could be better. Naturally Samba gets an outing, though Samba printing issues could have been better cross-referenced to printing in general. Security is important and well-covered--including the often confusing firewalling with IPchains. Naturally, programming and scripting are also well-covered.Read More
