LNER Branch Lines Book
The London and North Eastern Railway, one of the "big four" railway companies, served the public for 25 years, to the end of 1947 when it was nationalized. Formed at the Railway Grouping in 1923, it inherited numerous branch lines, many in rural areas where ancient locomotives pattered along with antique rolling stock. These lines proliferated in the North of England and rural Eastern England together with those in the northern suburbs of London, some of which had the most intensively operated railway services in the world. This is the story of these lines, many of which succumbed to the economics of the day and the ever-increasing competition from road transport. Each line is fully described including what remains can be seen today and therefore provides a unique guide for railway historians, modellers and walkers.Read More
