Excerpt: CHAPTER VI A STBANGE AWAKENING I WOKE out of what seemed a sleep of ages. In unconsciousness I have heard it is sight that is the first of the senses to go. The first of the senses to return is hearing. So before I opened my eyes, my ears were opened. I heard a man's voice saying close to me. " Oh! yes, I think so. She will be all right now." And my first feeling was one of drowsy, dreamy astonishment -- recognition! Surely I knew that voice? It came to me as it were out of some dim and distant previous existence. Vaguely I remembered hearing it long ago as I sat back against the cushions of an up-river punt. . . ,: The boat had swayed gently on the water under the arbour of over-hanging willows. And that voice had said " Jolly here, isn't it, Rose ? " It was the voice of my boy-friend, the medical student; Reggie Penmore!
