Growing Frogs Book

Although this is first and foremost a storybook Growing Frogs also goes into detail of how to keep frogspawn and hatch your own frogs. The book is split into two sections: the story section which features large, clear text and then the factual and practical part is delivered in smaller text. The story itself is of a young girl who collects some frogspawn and watches as it first turns into tadpoles and then into frogs. The factual text gives more precise details on fertilisation, collecting and keeping frogspawn, the development and care of the tadpoles and how they grow into fully formed frogs. The illustrations also clearly show the development of the tadpoles as they grow legs and become frogs. Collecting frogspawn and watching it develop is a fascinating project that costs absolutely nothing, keeps children occupied and incredibly happy and, if the frogs are then returned to the place where the frogspawn was originally found, no damage is done to the environment. Frogs are an increasingly endangered species and this book highlights how we can all help protect them for future generations. Growing Frogs is a great book that successfully combines fact and fiction in an enjoyable and informative way, making it much more fun than a traditional non-fiction book on the same subject.
