With so many novels using a war-time setting, it takes a special writer to ensure that his book stands out from the throng. Victor Pemberton is such a writer, and Goodnight Amy is a wonderfully detailed and involving study of a community surviving the destruction of war. Amy Dodds says goodnight to her mother when the latter leaves her terraced home to disappear into the streets of a blitz-torn London. Amy is the eldest, and finds herself obliged to hold the family together. Her ineffectual father is no help, and Amy is most worried by her sister Thelma, who is reaching a very dangerous age. Then Amy bumps into Tom Gudgeon and her life changes yet again. Soon she has determined to find out what happened to her mother and uncovers a dark secret.
