The Black Rhino and his friend Tikbird wonder why Crocodile is crying. They are hesitant to ask him as Crocodile has a reputation for eating animals that come too near! So they circle the area, asking each animal they see why Crocodile is crying. But the animals to ask are difficult to find as their numbers are growing ever smaller. Each animal says perhaps that is why Crocodile is crying-he mourns the potential extinction of certain species. Finally the Black Rhino and Tikbird go back to the Crocodile and ask him the question: why are you crying? They learn he is not crying but in fact doing what all crocs do: wetting his eyes in the hot, dry sun. And the Black Rhino and his friend learn something else: Crocs can snap you up for lunch in a hurry if you don't watch out! And he doesn't mind if you are part of a dying species or not! A humorous ending sets everything right again. A photo of each endangered animal discussed is included in the back of the book, along with a brief description of its current status. The animals include: Black Rhino, Golden Eagle, African Elephant, Long -toed Tree Frog, Brenton Butterfly, Maasai Giraffe and the Cheetah. Also included are the Tikbird and an ostrich and of course the crocodile.
