Artists on Comics Art Book

Having provided an excellent forum for Comicdom's finest writers to divulge their pearls of wisdom in Writers on Comics Scriptwriting, journalist Mark Salisbury now turns his attention to today's greatest comic visionaries. Again, Salisbury has assembled an equally impressive set of interviewees, whose vivid, remarkable stylings have been instrumental in some of the most significant and influential works of the last 20 years. So, both aspiring artists and curious fans will be more than catered for with the likes of Frank Miller (The Dark Knight Returns), Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) and Steve Dillon (Preacher) adorning these pages. Additionally, the author's subjects covers a wide spectrum of art styles, from Brian Bolland's (The Killing Joke) ultra-fine line work and Alex Ross' (Kingdom Come) photo-realistic paintings to Dave McKean's (The Sandman) surreal, haunting imagery and the bombastic stylings of Joe Quesada (Daredevil). Like the first volume, Salisbury divines superbly candid insight from his subjects, their particular processes laid bare: Bolland has completely abandoned pen and paper for the computer, while Gibbon's complex composition process for Watchmen is fascinating stuff. After reading such compelling testimonies, you would be hard-pressed to suppress the desire to put pencil to paper. Hats off to Salisbury, then, for giving aspiring artists such esteemed advice. --Danny GraydonRead More
