Alkali-activated Cements and Concretes Book

Na2O, K2O, Li2O; MeO include CaO and MgO; and Me2O3 include Al2O3. These two types of binders can be manufactured by directly mixing alkaline activators (sodium, potassium alkalis and salts) into ground metallurgical slags, fly ashes and natural pozzolans. Some other components may be added to improve the properties of the binders. These binders can display much better mechanical and durability properties than conventional cement and concrete. It uses industrial by-products or recycled materials as major components, consumes very minimal amount of energy, and has no direct release of greenhouse gases. Thus, it is a really "Green Cement". During the past three decades, researchers and scientists all over the world have been investigating these binders and related concrete, mainly on alkali-activated slag cement. Many special applications have been developed for these cements in addition to conventional construction uses. Although many papers and research reports have been published, no English book has been published. This book has reviewed and summarized all research progresses related to alkali-activated cements and concrete all over the world. It discusses the raw materials and their properties for the production of these two types of binders, hydration and microstructure development of alkali-activated slag cements, mechanical properties of alkali-activated slag cement and concrete, durability, other various cementing systems, and their applications.
