James has highlighted a particularly interesting feature of the character of Percy Jackson; that is he is a hero in spite of his dyslexia. It is also true that there is a lack of representation of disabilities in heroic or leading characters in literature. The author, Rick Riordan was a teacher of English before embarking on his literary career, and has the right experience to fully appreciate the difficulties of dyslexia, both practically and emotionally, for children and young people. The Percy Jackson series has won a string of literary awards for Rick Riordan, and a film version of Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief is in production.
