Iain Banks announced his terminal cancer with the words "I am now officially Very Poorly" an understatement which carried so much weight.
He is a man with incredible imagination, wit, warmth, a prodigious writer and a severe critic of political manoeuvres and contrivances.
He was such a strong opponent of our involvement in the Iraq war it is alleged he tore up his passport and sent it off to Tony Blair.
His first novel The Wasp Factory (1984) created turbulence among literary critics. Some deemed it a work of "unparalleled depravity" whilst others applauded a new literary sensation. The novel is shocking and gruesome but totally absorbing.

As a Science Fiction writer he is known as Iain M Banks and his first SF novel was "Consider Phlebas" in 1987. There are ten novels in this genre and they have been applauded by Sci-Fi readers as well as readers of mainstream literature. They are intelligent, superbly written, displaying amazing imagination and humour. |
