This Old Man (Classic Books with Holes) |
|
 | "This old man, he played one, he played knick-knack on my drum". I never understood what a knick-knack was as a child and am non-the-wiser now. However I always loved this catchy rhyme. I bought the book to enhance the singing of the rhyme to my first toddler.
The book is pleasant enough, but I don't feel that the illustrations marry up to the rhyme particularly well. For instance, "This old man, he played two, he played knick-knack on my shoe" is illustrated by a dancing pirate who has a wooden leg! Also, each page has a cut-out hole and the number of holes, and the pictures that you see through them don't have much of a bearing on the rhyme or the number in question.
There are better nursery-rhyme books out there and better board books with holes (my favourite is "There was an old lady who swallowed a fly").
