 | Second in the In the Garden series follows the well trodden Nora Roberts paranormal formula; a trio of strong female leads who manage quite nicely on their own, thank you, but meet their equal in a man whilst avoiding danger. Black Rose is the most interesting of the series, despite the fact that Roz (Rosalind Harper) and Mitch, the geneologist she hires to track the Harper Bride's past, are the oldest members of the group.
Roz is very likeable and cares deeply for her grown up boys, because of this the ghost who haunts her ancestral home has always been kind to her, singing her children to sleep with lullabies. Now that Roz faces falling in love again the Harper Bride becomes angry and vengeful. More of the mystery is revealed in this one but the Harper Bride lacks any real menace so far to qualify for Henry James-ian psychological horror.
The romance is very satisfying - if you can get past two older people enjoying sex, which some friends of mine found hampered their reading ... read more.
