On the whole, the author has done a very good job of bringing together the plotlines from the previous books in the series. The ending is a little contrived, but that was to be expected. There are plenty of contrived sections and sub-plots in the previous books from the series - this is, after all, a fantasy for older children (adult readers often forget that), and it requires some leaps of faith to allow it to move on.
