I picked this up because I had read one Peter Hamilton book before, and quite enjoyed it, and liked the synopsis on the back. Once I started it, I was hooked. The book has a fantastic array of characters, and Hamilton does a superb job of fleshing out the characters and making you care about them (whether you particularly like them or not). Some great imaginative twists on standard scifi ideas - humanity has spread out in 300 odd years from today, not by ships, but by train - albeit trains which go through wormholes. A far off star where it appears to have been enclosed in some sort of shell is spotted, and the main thread of the book is about investigating this threat. In some ways, the gripping nature of the story causes my only gripe with the book. Hamilton often uses the device of a cliffhanger a bit too often - a spaceship will have reached the barrier, but then the next chapter jumps back to a mundane part of life on the commonwealth.
