Christopher Reid, author of poetry book 'A Scattering', last night (Tuesday 26th January) won the 2009 Costa Book of the Year Award and picked up the £30,000 prize.
Reid was up against four other finalists, each of whom were the winners of the other categories; novel, first novel, biography and children. It is the sixth time a poetry book has been awarded the coveted title.
The collection of poems were written in memory of Christopher's wife Lucinda who passed away four years ago. The judges referred to the book as "a master work" describing the poems as "honest, moving and compelling".
