I stuck my finger under the edge of the paper and jerked it under the tape. 'Shoot ' I muttered when the paper sliced my finger. A single drop of blood oozed from the tiny cut. It all happened very quickly then. 'No!' Edward roared ...Dazed and disorientated I looked up from the bright red blood pulsing out of my arm - and into the fevered eyes of the six suddenly ravenous vampires. - An exert from Stephanie Meyer's New Moon ; ; For Bella Swan there is one thing more important than life itself: Edward Cullen. But being in love with a vampire is more dangerous than Bella ever could have imagined. Edward has already rescued Bella from the clutches of an evil vampire but now as their daring relationship threatens all that is near and dear to them they realise their troubles may just be beginning... ; ; Play.com Review ; ; The second book in Stephanie Meyer's fantasy romance saga New Moon picks up the action at Bella Swann's birthday bash where a little blood spilt goes a long way to breaking up her relationship with vampire dreamboat Edward Cullen. The biggest-selling childrens' paperback of 2008 with over 5.8 million copies sold the book spent 150 weeks on the USA Today Best Sellers list peaking at number one. Whilst the inevitable Hollywood smash movie adaptation of New Moon directed by Chris Weitz and starring Kirsten Stewart and Robert Pattinson is all set for a November 2009 release at the time of writing the novel is available right now and makes for essential reading. If the first novel Twilight was about finding true love then New Moon is about losing it. ; ; Stephenie Meyer is clearly a more confident writer than she was on her fantastic first novel Twilight. Meyer invests more time in exploring the motivations of the characters greatly expanding the role of Jacob Black in particular. Jacob's feelings for Bella and his lupine heritage colour some of the best sections of the novel as he struggles to compete with the absent Edward. However the greatest struggle is definitely that of the star-crossed lovers. Whilst Edward and the Cullens remove themselves from Forks to save Bella she lives life on the edge in the face of her doomed relationship with the gloomy vampire. Ultimately the two must face the consequences of their love and Bella must decide whether she is to die as a human or live as a vampire with Edward eternally. ; ; Whilst Meyer is a dab-hand at conveying emotion and chaste romance she's no slouch when it comes to action. Some of the most gripping chapters in the saga can be found in New Moon particularly the ones featuring malevolent Victoria a vampire searching for revenge on those who killed her lover from the first book James. Although the story is less streamlined than that of Twilight New Moon's more expansive nature allows for a greater degree of emotional and narrative exploration weaving several story strands with effortless precision. Ultimately New Moon will greatly appeal to the hordes of Twilight fans lusting for more vampiric teen-lit action but leave them suitably bloodthirsty for the next chapter Eclipse and the finale Breaking Dawn.
